the first .com domain

symbolics.com, registered on March 15, 1985 by a Lisp machine maker, was the Internet's first .com.

Symbolics, a spinoff of the MIT AI Lab selling Lisp workstations, registered the first commercial domain name years before the web existed; only a handful of organizations followed that whole year. The company faded with the AI winter, but the domain never lapsed and was sold in 2009 to an investor who keeps it as a museum piece. The Internet's oldest .com belongs to a business model that died before most of the Internet was born.
