Stands for: Secure Shell

The standard encrypted protocol for remote shell access and secure tunneling.

Secure Shell (RFC 4251) replaced Telnet by encrypting the whole session. It also underpins SCP, SFTP, and port-forwarding tunnels, and is authenticated by host keys and user keys or passwords.
