Stands for: Routing Information Protocol

One of the oldest routing protocols, using hop count as its metric.

Routing Information Protocol (RFC 2453) picks routes by fewest hops, capped at 15, which makes it simple but unsuitable for large networks. It survives mostly in small or legacy deployments, long superseded by OSPF and BGP.
