A direct association between two endpoints, with no intermediary acting as the resource.
The term shows up in two places worth separating. In TCP/IP's layered model, the host-to-host layer is the transport layer, TCP and UDP, whose job is end-to-end delivery between two hosts regardless of the routers in between. In topology talk, host-to-host means a plain point-to-point link, a crossover cable or a serial WAN circuit. Both senses share the idea: two ends, symmetric, no server in the middle.
