failover

term

networkingcloud

Moving service from a failed component to a standby, restoring availability without repairing the fault.

It is containment rather than cure, and it carries costs worth naming out loud: failing over to a standby that shares the fault takes down the survivor, and a contained problem often stops alerting, which means nobody is watching the thing that is still broken.

Also known as: fail-over, failover event
