the 'room 404' myth

lore

web devops culture

The popular but false claim that HTTP 404 is named after a specific room at CERN where the web's first server lived.

The story goes that requests for a missing file were routed to 'room 404' and bounced back - a tidy tale with no basis. 404 is simply the HTTP status for 'Not Found', where the leading 4 marks a client error, exactly like 400, 401, and 403; there was no magic room.

Disputed / commonly mistold A popular version of this story is inaccurate - see the note above.
