end-to-end encryption

term

cryptographyprivacysecurity

Stands for: end-to-end encryption (E2EE)

Encryption where only the communicating endpoints can read the messages, not the servers in between.

With E2EE the keys live on the devices, so the provider relaying the messages cannot read them, unlike transport encryption, which protects data only in transit between each hop. It is the standard for private messaging, and the reason lawful-access debates keep recurring.

Also known as: e2ee, end-to-end, end to end encryption
