data in transit
termsecurity
Data moving across a network - and the encryption applied so that whoever carries it cannot read it.
It is the better understood half, and the one where the assumption most often outruns the configuration: traffic is encrypted to the load balancer and plaintext behind it, or encrypted with a certificate nobody validates. The honest audit question is not whether it is encrypted but on which segments, and what each end actually checked before trusting the other.
