Clippy

Microsoft's animated paperclip assistant, beloved in memory and despised in use, the cautionary tale of proactive UI.
Introduced with Office 97 as Clippit, the Office Assistant interrupted work to offer help nobody asked for ('It looks like you're writing a letter'), was switched off by default in Office XP and removed entirely by Office 2007. Its failure became required reading in interaction design: assistance must be invited, contextual, and easy to dismiss. Every modern AI copilot ships against the ghost of Clippy.
