Services company

term

networkingops culture

A company that sells people and process rather than product: consulting, outsourcing, managed operations.

Harder to explain to a market and harder to scale than a product business, because the thing being sold is judgement and judgement does not have a bill of materials. The commercial shape matters operationally: a managed-services contract moves the pager, and whoever holds the pager ends up owning decisions the contract never mentioned. Reading a services agreement as a technical document - what is monitored, what may be changed without asking, who declares an incident - explains more about how an estate behaves than most architecture diagrams.

Also known as: managed services, outsourcing, msp, consulting
