The PingFederate component that actually authenticates a user - or receives one authenticated elsewhere: HTML Form, HTTP Basic, Kerberos, OpenToken, and Reference ID each embody a different integration pattern.
Adapters are the leaves of authentication policy trees; the policy decides which adapter a given user meets, in what order, with what fallbacks.
