Stands for: IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet)

The IEEE working group and standard for Ethernet - every wired speed and medium, plus Power over Ethernet.

802.3 has carried Ethernet from 10BASE5 coax to hundreds of gigabits, each variant a lettered amendment, and defines PoE across 802.3af, 802.3at, and the four-pair 802.3bt. It inherited the 1500-byte frame from DIX Ethernet and has repeatedly declined to standardize jumbo frames - which is why 9000-byte support is a vendor convention rather than a clause.
