the 640K quote
loreops cultureprogramming
The famous line '640K ought to be enough for anybody', attributed to Bill Gates, who has repeatedly denied ever saying it.
No primary source has ever surfaced for the quote, and Gates has publicly denied it more than once, noting that nobody involved in the PC's memory limits thought them permanent. The 640 KB ceiling itself was real, an artifact of the original IBM PC memory map, which is why the line felt plausible enough to stick. It survives as the canonical parable about underestimating future requirements, pinned to a man who never said it.
