What the word meant before it meant this
At MIT in the late 1950s a hack was a clever, slightly outrageous solution - a term from the model-railroad club that moved with its people onto the university's computers. Steven Levy's Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution wrote down the ethic those people lived by: access should be unlimited and hands-on, mistrust authority, judge people by their work rather than their credentials.
That word was captured in 1983 and has never been fully returned. This is the story of what happened in between - four decades, five distinct motives, and a subculture that was prosecuted into existence and then hired.
1. The telephone years: curiosity as the motive
The first hackers hacked the phone company, because in the 1960s and 70s the phone company was the largest computer on Earth and its control language was audible. Phone phreaking worked because the network signalled in-band: a 2600 Hz tone told a trunk it was idle, and anything that could make the sound could command the switch.
Joybubbles - Joe Engressia, blind, with perfect pitch - discovered at seven that he could whistle it. John Draper found the same frequency in a cereal-box toy and became Captain Crunch. Ron Rosenbaum's 1971 Esquire article put it all on newsstands, where two Californians named Steve read it, built blue boxes, sold them in dorms, and later founded Apple.
The technical moral outlived the technology: separate the control plane from the data plane. Every injection attack since - , header smuggling, prompt injection - is the same sin in new clothing.
The people mattered too, and the history usually forgets half of them. Susan Headley, known as Susy Thunder, was among the first true masters of social engineering, talking her way into telephone and military systems by voice alone; she left and was largely written out of the accounts that made her contemporaries famous. Jude Milhon - St. Jude - helped build the first public computerised bulletin board, later coined cypherpunk, and defined hacking better than anyone has since: the clever circumvention of imposed limits.
2. 1983: the year the word changed
Two things happened in one summer. WarGames opened in June, and weeks later the 414s were arrested - six Milwaukee teenagers who had wandered into a cancer hospital, a bank and Los Alamos using default and blank passwords.
Life and film merged in the same news cycle. Newsweek put a hacker on its cover, Congress held hearings with a clip from the movie played as evidence, and President Reagan asked his Joint Chiefs whether it could really happen - producing NSDD-145, the first US national policy on computer security, and three years later the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986, still the statute under which American computer crime is charged.
A law written during a media panic against a threat model drawn from a movie has been reaching people ever since: researchers, employees breaking terms of service, journalists. That is the price of legislating in a fright.
3. The scenes: crews, clubs, and how they differed
The American underground organised into crews. The Legion of Doom and Masters of Deception fought the Great Hacker War over pride and telephone switches - and then the state arrived: in fourteen cities, a magazine prosecuted over a document that cost thirteen dollars in a catalogue, and a role-playing game manuscript seized as a hacking manual. Both cases collapsed, and the EFF was founded out of the wreckage.
The German scene organised as an association instead. The Chaos Computer Club moved 134,000 marks out of a Hamburg bank overnight in 1984 - then gave it back at a press conference and explained the flaw. Proof plus restitution plus publication turned out to be a method that survives its founders; the CCC now testifies before Germany's constitutional court.
The Australian scene got a book instead of a legend: Underground, researched by a young hacker called Mendax.
Underneath all of them ran the Scene - the release culture with its own economy, rules and ASCII art - and its dialect, leet, which began as filter evasion and hardened into an in-group marker.
4. The four motives, in the order they appeared
The whole century fits into four answers to why:
- Curiosity — , the 414s, the early crews. Getting in was the point.
- Scale, by accident — the Morris worm, 1988. A measurement tool with one wrong constant (reinfect one time in seven) melted the internet, created CERT, and produced the first CFAA conviction. Getting the throttle wrong is the whole story.
- Money and espionage — the KGB hack that Cliff Stoll followed from a 75-cent accounting error; later Albert Gonzalez and 170 million payment cards.
- The message — the WANK worm on NASA's terminals in 1989, the first hacktivist action, ancestor of Anonymous and LulzSec.
5. The famous names, and what is actually true
Kevin Mitnick was the best social engineer who ever worked, and almost everything else said about him was false. He could not launch a missile by whistling into a payphone; that invention denied him bail and helped keep him in custody for years before trial. He served his time and spent two decades teaching the defence.
Kevin Poulsen took over a radio station's phone lines to win a Porsche while holding a defence-research day job - then became a journalist who co-built SecureDrop.
Cliff Stoll invented incident response by not knowing it did not exist: paper logbook, printers on every line, and the first documented honeypot.
Mudge and the L0pht told the Senate in 1998 they could take the internet down in thirty minutes, and were not exaggerating - (Border Gateway Protocol) had no authentication.
Gary McKinnon entered dozens of US military systems looking for UFOs, mostly via blank passwords. Marcus Hutchins stopped with a ten-dollar domain and was arrested three months later for something he wrote as a teenager. Barnaby Jack made two ATMs spray cash on a conference stage and moved an industry in one afternoon.
6. How the underground built the industry
The publishing came first. Phrack, 2600 and the Manifesto were the curriculum, the newspaper and the creed - and Aleph One's Smashing the Stack in 49 taught memory corruption to everyone at once, which is exactly why full disclosure has been argued about ever since.
Then the tools. SATAN in 1995 was the first full public fight about handing defenders an attacker's tool; every argument about Nmap and Metasploit is a rerun.
Then the institutions. 1998: the L0pht in the Senate, at DEF CON, and the underground becoming consultable. The conference itself is the clearest artifact of the transition - cash at the door, no attendee database, and tens of thousands of people held together by unpaid volunteers in red shirts.
And alongside it the parallel movement that shaped everything: the free software and open source argument, and the cypherpunks, whose conviction that code protects privacy better than law produced , PGP's ecosystem, and eventually the entire cryptographic infrastructure of the modern web.
7. The timeline
Dates are first public occurrence unless noted; where a thing ran for years, the year given is when it started or when it surfaced.
The telephone era
- 1959 — MIT's Tech Model Railroad Club is using hack to mean a clever, outrageous solution.
- 1971 — Ron Rosenbaum's Esquire piece on the blue box makes phreaking public; Wozniak and Jobs build and sell boxes.
- 1975 — John Brunner's The Shockwave Rider names a self-replicating program a worm.

The scene forms, and the word changes
- 1981 — founded in Berlin.

Consequences arrive

- 1990 — Steve Jackson Games is raided in March; Operation Sundevil runs in May; the Electronic Frontier Foundation is founded in July.

- 1992 — mailing list begins; Masters of Deception members are indicted; Sterling's The Hacker Crackdown appears.

The underground professionalises
- 1995 — Mitnick is arrested in February; SATAN is released in April; the film Hackers opens.

The state arrives

- 2011 — runs for fifty days; the SecurID breach reaches Lockheed Martin.
- 2013 — The Target breach; the Snowden disclosures; dies while facing prosecution.
- 2014 — The Sony Pictures wiper attack; Citizenfour is released.
- 2015 — Miller and Valasek take over a Jeep on a public highway.
- 2016 — begin publishing; the DNC intrusion becomes an influence operation.
- 2017 — powers WannaCry and ; Marcus Hutchins stops one and is arrested three months later.
8. What the century actually teaches
Read across all of it and the same few lessons repeat with different costumes:
The vulnerability is almost never exotic. Default passwords let the 414s into Los Alamos and McKinnon into military networks; weak passwords and a debug flag carried the Morris worm; a misconfiguration let the KGB's hacker into Berkeley. Thirty years later, credential failures still lead breach reports.
The human layer is the real perimeter. Mitnick took more by asking than by exploiting, and an entire training industry exists because of it.
Press framing becomes legal reality. Mitnick, the 414s, the E911 document - narratives set the sentences, and researchers still live with the consequences.
Disclosure is a permanent argument, not a solved problem. Full disclosure, coordinated disclosure, bug bounties: every arrangement is a truce between people who need vendors to move and vendors who need time.
People change, and the field is better when it lets them. Poulsen, Mitnick, Hutchins, half the L0pht. The pipeline from underground to industry is not a scandal; it is the reason the industry knows anything.
What the state does not understand, it seizes. Steve Jackson Games, the BBS raids, extradition fights. The correction has always had to be built by someone - which is why the exists.
Where the century ends
The 20th century closed with the underground holding a Senate microphone and running its own conference. The 21st opened with states as the primary actors: Stuxnet crossing an air gap to destroy centrifuges, the Shadow Brokers leaking government tooling that became WannaCry and NotPetya within weeks, and turning intrusion into an industry with customer support.
The people in this guide were mostly teenagers with modems who wanted to know how things worked. What they learned, and how badly the world reacted to their learning it, produced the entire discipline that now defends everything. That is the argument for teaching this history rather than mythologising it: the techniques are dated, and every single institutional lesson is still live.
