Embraer - the state built an aerospace company and then sold it

Founded 1969 as a national champion, privatised 1994, third largest producer of civil aircraft.

Embraer was founded on 19 August 1969 at Sao Jose dos Campos by Ozires Silva with government funding, as a deliberate attempt to create domestic aerospace capability. It supplied the air force first, moved to regional airliners for export in the 1980s, was privatised in 1994, and is now the third largest producer of civil aircraft.

The arc is the interesting part, and it is unusual: a state-funded national champion that survived privatisation and then competed internationally on engineering rather than on protection. Most attempts at that sequence fail at the second step.

The computing behind it is the reason it belongs here. Aircraft design is decades of engineering data that must remain readable and traceable for the service life of the airframe - which is longer than the life of any format, any vendor and most operating systems. Configuration management on that timescale is a records problem before it is a storage problem.

It is also an export-controlled manufacturer with suppliers on several continents, which makes the network a compliance surface as much as a transport: what may cross which border, in which direction, is a question about data as much as about parts.
