L0pht Heavy Industries
termsecurityhacking
The Boston hacker collective of the 1990s - a rented loft full of salvaged hardware where Mudge, Weld Pond, Space Rogue, Kingpin, Brian Oblivion, Tan and Stefan Von Neumann did serious vulnerability research and published it for free.
The L0pht built L0phtCrack, the Windows password auditor that made the weakness of LAN Manager hashing undeniable, ran the Hacker News Network, and in May 1998 testified to the US Senate under their handles that they could take down the internet in thirty minutes. They then did the thing the underground rarely does: went legitimate as @stake, which trained a large share of the industry's first professional generation. Mudge later ran security research at DARPA, Google and Twitter.
