Orange - a former state monopoly with a global enterprise arm

The other side of the European story: the operator the national champions were built to supply.

Orange is a French multinational telecommunications operator, descended from the state monopoly, and it sits on this timeline as the counterpart to entries like Italtel: where the national champion manufactured, the national operator bought, and the relationship between them shaped both.

Its enterprise arm matters to anybody running an international network, because a multinational estate is not assembled from one carrier. It is stitched together from whichever operator holds the local licence in each country, and the party that does the stitching absorbs the incompatibilities - different SLAs, different provisioning times, different definitions of what an outage is.

That integration role is invisible on a network diagram and is often the reason a change takes six weeks in one country and six months in another.
