Infoblox - DDI, and why it is one product

DNS, DHCP and address management are three protocols and one source of truth.

Infoblox builds DDI - the industry's contraction for DNS, DHCP and IP address management sold as one system. The contraction exists because the three cannot honestly be operated apart: an address is allocated by DHCP, recorded in address management, and made findable by DNS, and any of them disagreeing with the others produces a fault that appears somewhere else entirely.

The failure this addresses is mundane and constant. A spreadsheet of subnets, a DHCP scope edited by hand and a DNS zone maintained separately will diverge, and the divergence surfaces as a duplicate address, an unresolvable host, or a lease handed out for a network that was decommissioned last year.

It is also the reason DDI appliances end up holding an unglamorous kind of authority: once the three are unified, the system that allocates addresses becomes the record of what exists on the network, which is a heavier responsibility than the product category suggests.
