2020
Tenable
Vulnerability management from the pre-sales chair, in the year the career turned to teaching.
A short chapter with a precise place in the story. Through 2020 the work ran through CYLK, the São Paulo security integrator, as an on-demand consultant: pre-sales support, proofs of concept, scoping and pricing for end customers' security needs. CYLK and InLearn were sister companies in the same group at the time, and the move to full-time instruction with InLearn was already under way; these were the last point engagements of the practitioner before the teacher took over the week.
Tenable.io and Tenable.sc, pre-sales, 2020
The engagements were vulnerability management, Tenable's whole business: scanning what an organisation actually has, ranking what is exposed, and showing a customer where to start. The two platforms of the day were Tenable.io, the cloud-managed service, and Tenable.sc, the on-premises console that grew out of SecurityCenter, and the work covered both: demonstrations and proofs of concept against the customer's own environment, the scoping of licences by asset count, and the architecture conversations about scanners, agents and where the data would live.
The certifications, and what they were for
Tenable's partner programme certifies three pre-sales roles per platform, engineer, integrator and architect, and 2020 produced all six, for Tenable.io and for Tenable.sc, plus the Certified Sales Associate. They were the admission ticket to run the engagements above rather than ornaments, and they lapsed in 2022 when the work had moved on; the record keeps them with their dates for that reason.
Nessus, fourteen years earlier
The 2020 chapter was not the first time Tenable's product did work on this record. In the Enterasys years, 2005 to 2007, the LAN access control solution deployed for customers in Brazil, Sentinel and then Enterasys NAC, assessed every end system before admitting it, and the engine it called for the assessment was a Nessus server; a failed scan meant a quarantine policy and a remediation page, a passing one meant access. That deployment, with its containment side in Dragon and the NetSight Automated Security Manager, is told in the Cabletron and Enterasys chapter, with the Enterasys documents it is drawn from. Nessus had been Tenable's since the company was founded around it in 2002.
What it certified
Tenable Certified Sales Associate (TCSA); Tenable.io Certified Pre-Sales Engineer, Integrator and Architect; Tenable.sc Certified Pre-Sales Engineer, Integrator and Architect. All 2020 to 2022. Listed with their evidence on the credentials page.
The company was founded in 2002. This page covers only the years worked with it.
