The 1987 Chicago broadcast hijacking by someone in a Max Headroom mask, still unsolved.
On the night of November 22, 1987, an intruder overpowered the studio-to-transmitter links of two Chicago stations, first WGN's sportscast for seconds, then WTTW during Doctor Who for about ninety bizarre seconds of masked ranting. Overriding a broadcast link required real RF engineering and more transmit power than the legitimate uplink, and despite an FCC investigation nobody was ever identified. It remains broadcast signal intrusion's defining case and one of hacker culture's favorite mysteries.
In November 1987 two Chicago television stations were interrupted by someone in a Max Headroom mask, transmitting a bizarre and unsettling segment over the broadcast signal. The perpetrators were never identified, and the case remains open.
Technically it was a signal intrusion: overpowering the studio-to-transmitter microwave link with a stronger signal on the same frequency. That is not hacking in the computational sense, it is physics, and it required equipment, knowledge of the link's characteristics and a willingness to sit near a transmitter with a strong illegal source. The broadcast infrastructure of the period assumed nobody would do this, and its security rested on that assumption alone.
The case endures for two reasons. It is genuinely unsolved, which is rare for anything so public, and it is a clean illustration that a system's security model is often just an assumption about the attacker's motivation. Broadcast links were not authenticated because nobody could think of a reason to hijack one, which is the same reasoning that leaves industrial protocols unauthenticated today, and the same reasoning that fails the moment someone finds a reason.
