The 2016 compromise of the Democratic National Committee and campaign staff by two separate Russian intelligence groups - designated Cozy Bear and Fancy Bear - whose stolen email was then published through fronts including Guccifer 2.0 and WikiLeaks during a US presidential election.
The initial access was a credential-phishing message that looked like a routine password reset, which is the detail everyone should keep: the most consequential political intrusion of the century began the way most breaches do. Its real novelty was doctrinal - the theft was not the operation, the publication was. Once stolen material can be released selectively and amplified, an intrusion becomes an influence campaign, and every election authority since has had to plan for both.
