Slang for having been thoroughly defeated or compromised.

From a likely typo of "owned" in gaming culture, "pwned" spread to security to mean an account or system that has been taken. It is immortalized in "Have I Been Pwned", the service that checks whether your address appears in known breaches.

Pwned comes most plausibly from a typo of owned, with p adjacent to o on the keyboard, spreading through gaming culture before security adopted it to mean a system or account fully under someone else's control. The etymology is uncertain enough that competing explanations exist, and the word's usefulness never depended on the answer.

What it adds over compromised is completeness and tone. Compromised is clinical and admits degrees; pwned means the attacker has it, entirely, and the informality carries a hint of the humiliation that a serious breach actually involves. That emotional register is why it survived into professional use despite looking like a typo, and why breach-notification services adopted it.

Its migration is worth noting for what it says about the field. Security vocabulary largely comes from the offensive side, because that is where the culture was strongest and most verbal, and defenders inherited the language of the people they defend against. That inheritance is mostly harmless and occasionally revealing, since a profession that describes failure in the attacker's slang is one whose self-image was formed by the other side.
