NewEdge is the answer to a question every cloud security platform must answer: where does the inspection actually happen. Concentrating it in a few large regions means users far from one pay latency on every request, and backhaul is precisely the cost the architecture was supposed to remove.
The alternative is many points of presence, peered directly with the networks users and applications already use, so traffic enters the security fabric close to where it starts and leaves close to where it is going. Direct peering matters more than the count of locations: a nearby point of presence reached over a congested transit path is not nearby in any sense that affects a user.
The reason this is worth understanding rather than accepting is that it determines the failure modes. Performance complaints in cloud security platforms are usually path problems rather than inspection problems, and knowing whether traffic reaches a well-peered nearby edge or is being carried across a continent first is what distinguishes a tuning exercise from an architecture one. It is also the property that no datasheet number captures, since a location list says nothing about how traffic gets there.
