Fibre to the home runs optical fibre the whole way to the subscriber, removing the copper segment that limited every earlier access technology. The capacity ceiling stops being the medium and becomes the equipment at each end, which can be upgraded without touching the plant.
That is the durable argument for it. Copper technologies extracted remarkable performance from wire never designed for data and each hit a physical wall; fibre installed today carries generations of future equipment. The cost is entirely in construction, which is why deployment maps follow density and civil works difficulty rather than demand, and why the last few percent of any country is the part that requires policy rather than a business case.
