Digital Equipment Corporation's networking suite - the protocol that ran the VAX era, evolving from proprietary roots toward OSI.

DECnet (formally Digital Network Architecture, DNA) connected DEC's PDP and VAX machines from the mid-1970s. Phase IV was the widely deployed peer-to-peer version of the 1980s; Phase V realigned it onto OSI protocols as the industry standardized. It shared 1990s Ethernet segments with AppleTalk and IPX before TCP/IP displaced them all - a name every network engineer of the minicomputer era knew, and part of the lineage behind vendors like Cabletron that grew up wiring those machines.

DECnet was Digital Equipment Corporation's networking suite, and for a substantial period it did things TCP/IP could not. Its later phases offered a hierarchical address space, integrated naming, and a routing architecture that OSI standardized, in a coherent stack from a single vendor who supported all of it.

It lost anyway, and the reasons are more interesting than technical inferiority. TCP/IP was not owned by anyone, so it could be implemented by anyone without permission or licence, and it was already installed across the research networks that grew into the internet. A superior protocol tied to one manufacturer competes against a good-enough protocol that every manufacturer can implement, and that contest has a predictable outcome.

The pattern is worth carrying forward because it keeps recurring. Technical merit is one input among several, and openness, installed base and freedom to implement routinely beat it. Anyone evaluating a vendor's integrated stack against an open standard is having the same argument DEC's customers had, and the historical record is not encouraging for the integrated stack, however good it currently is.
