Honeywell

A thermostat company that became a mainframe company and then went back to controlling physical things.

Mark Honeywell founded the Honeywell Heating Specialty Company in Wabash, Indiana in 1906. The other half of the lineage is older still: Albert Butz had formed the Butz Thermo-Electric Regulator Company in 1886 to commercialise a device that opened and closed a furnace damper on its own, and that business became the Minneapolis Heat Regulator Company. The two merged in 1927 as Minneapolis-Honeywell, and for its first fifty years the company's business was regulating temperature.

Then it became a computer company, which most people have forgotten. It entered through a 1955 joint venture with Raytheon, bought out its partner, acquired Computer Control Corporation in 1966, and through the 1960s was one of the manufacturers collectively nicknamed Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - IBM being Snow White. As the field thinned to five the survivors were renamed after their initials: Burroughs, UNIVAC, NCR, Control Data and Honeywell. The BUNCH.

In 1970 it bought General Electric's computer division, and that is the transaction that matters here. It rebranded the GE-600 mainframes as the Honeywell 6000 series - and it inherited GE's ongoing operating system project, Multics.

Multics matters here because of what it established. It was an enormously ambitious timesharing system, and it set the standard for what such a system should do about security in particular - rings of protection, access control on segments, the idea that a machine shared by mutually distrustful users needs the operating system to enforce that distrust. Its influence on Unix is not a matter of vague inheritance: the name Unix was coined in deliberate contrast to it. Every Unix-derived system in use today, including the ones this site's tools run on, is downstream of an argument about Multics.

Honeywell also became a serious force in storage. Its joint venture with Bull and Control Data, Magnetic Peripherals, was the world leader in fourteen-inch disk drives through the 1970s and early 1980s.

And then it left. It merged its computer operations with Bull and NEC in 1986, sold the division outright to Groupe Bull, and by 1991 was out of the computer business entirely. In 1986 it had bought Sperry Aerospace - a piece of a fellow BUNCH member - and turned back toward avionics and control systems.

The 1999 transaction is worth stating precisely, because it is usually said backwards. AlliedSignal acquired Honeywell, and then took the Honeywell name for itself, because the name was worth more than its own. The acquired company's brand survived the acquirer's.

What it does now closes a circle. Honeywell builds industrial automation, building control and aerospace systems - which is to say it is once again in the business of controlling physical things, having spent thirty-five years in the business of computing them. And it is an investor in Nozomi Networks, which appears on this timeline for monitoring the security of industrial control systems. A company that spent the 1970s running the operating system that taught the industry about protection domains now funds the people watching its own controllers for intrusions.

The timeline

  1. The tiger team report

    An Air Force team led by Paul Karger and Roger Schell attacked Multics and wrote up what they found. The individual flaws mattered less than the demonstration: they showed the protection mechanism could be subverted by malicious software placed inside it, rather than defeated from outside. Among the observations, in a few lines, was that a back door could be hidden in the binary of a compiler.

  2. Project Guardian

    A joint Honeywell, MIT and Air Force effort initiated by Schell to build a minimised, verifiable security kernel in response to his own report. The conclusion the work rested on was that restructuring around such a kernel was essential before any system could be exposed to determined professional attackers - which was written about timesharing and reads as a description of the internet.

  3. The first B2

    Multics became the first operating system certified at B2 under the Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria - twenty years after the project started, and about a decade after the report that said it was not secure enough.

Flagship products and solutions

  • The Honeywell 6180The specific machine the security evaluations were run against, and the one whose hardware enforced the protection rings the software depended on. Security work of this kind is always about a particular processor, whatever the papers say afterwards.
  • MulticsThe timesharing system inherited with the GE division, and the one piece of this company's computing history that is still argued about.
  • The Access Isolation MechanismMandatory access controls shipped in every Multics rather than in a special military edition, because the Air Force wanted commercially available systems rather than government-only ones.

Key innovations

  • Rings, which are still in the processor you are reading this onHardware-enforced protection rings came out of this work, and the vocabulary survives exactly: ring 0 for the kernel and ring 3 for user code are Multics terms describing a Multics idea, implemented in every x86 processor made since. Very little from 1970s operating system research is still present in silicon.
  • Security you cannot buy the cheap version ofBecause the Air Force insisted on commercial off-the-shelf systems rather than a government special, the mandatory access controls shipped to every customer with everything defaulted to the lowest classification. That is an unusual procurement decision with a lasting consequence: the secure configuration was the ordinary product, not an upgrade.
  • The compiler back door, ten years earlyThe idea that a compiler could be modified to insert a back door into everything it built appears in the 1974 report, a decade before it became famous as a lecture. That the observation was made during a government security evaluation of a commercial operating system, and then largely forgotten until somebody restated it memorably, is its own comment on how security knowledge propagates.
  • The critic who wrote the standardSchell led the team that documented Multics' weaknesses, then directed the agency that produced the Orange Book - the criteria against which secure systems were evaluated for the next decade, and which reads throughout as though written by somebody who had spent years attacking a specific system. The evaluation became the standard because its author was given the chance to generalise it.

Main markets

Its computing customers were governments, universities and large enterprises buying timesharing at a moment when a computer was a shared institutional resource rather than a personal one. Five large Multics systems went to the Air Force Data Services Center in the Pentagon alone.

Its market today is industrial and building automation and aerospace - controlling physical processes rather than computing about them.

Analyst standing

  • There is no computing position left to assess. What survives is a body of published work: the protection ring paper, the Karger and Schell evaluation, the design principles that came out of the same group, and the criteria that followed from them.
  • The record here is that a mainframe division sold off and forgotten is nonetheless load-bearing. The vocabulary of operating system protection, the practice of formally evaluating security claims, and the observation that trusted tools can betray you all trace back through this machine - and every one of them arrived because somebody was funded to attack it and write down what worked.
