Auvik

Waterloo's cloud network management for MSPs: 100,000 networks, 12 million devices, and a $250 million cheque from Great Hill Partners.

Auvik was founded in 2011 by Alex Hoff, Marc Morin and David Yach and moved into its Waterloo, Ontario headquarters in 2018. It describes itself today as an AI-driven IT management platform that combines real-time infrastructure data with intelligent agents, and says it helps managed service providers and IT teams manage more than 100,000 networks worldwide and twelve million distinct devices.

The company's own history runs from 21 employees in 2013 to 305 in 2023. In 2018 it acquired Talaia and raised a CAD$20 million Series C; in 2021 Great Hill Partners invested US$250 million; in 2022 it bought MetaGeek, the Boise Wi-Fi tools company, and in 2024 Saaslio and Boardgent. Douglas Murray became chief executive and Mark Ralls president in 2024.

The MetaGeek chapter is the one this record follows most closely, because it ran both ways: Auvik acquired the Wi-Spy, inSSIDer and Chanalyzer tools in April 2022 and sold the business to Oscium in October 2024, so the wireless analysers that were briefly part of a cloud management platform are back with an instrument maker. The MetaGeek and Oscium records carry the detail.

Why a managed-service-provider tool is on a record built around enterprise networking: the MSP market is where network monitoring went when the enterprise frameworks of the Tivoli and OpenView era became too heavy for the organisations that most needed watching. Auvik, like the open source monitors elsewhere on this timeline, is an answer to the question of who watches the networks that cannot afford a network operations centre.
