Atos - the estate somebody else runs
Large-scale IT outsourcing, where the contract decides the architecture.
Atos is a French IT services corporation operating at the scale where an organisation hands over the running of its infrastructure entirely. That arrangement changes engineering in a way rarely discussed: the shape of a system stops being decided by architects and starts being decided by what the service agreement priced.
An outsourced estate accumulates a specific kind of technical debt. Changes cost money per change, so small improvements that would be free in-house are deferred until they can be bundled, and the bundle becomes a project, and the project becomes a negotiation. The result is estates that move in large infrequent steps rather than continuously.
None of that is a criticism of the model, which exists because running infrastructure well is genuinely hard and genuinely unglamorous. It is a statement about where the decisions actually live, which is the thing an engineer joining such an estate needs to understand first.
